Poems of Rob Donn Mackay.

 Item
Identifier: MS.1669
Scope and Contents A volume of songs of Rob Donn Mackay (1714-1778); according to a note at the front, of unknown authorship (folio i), it was taken down from the recitation of the poet, who could not write, ‘by a daughter of the parish Minister, John Thomson, 1763-1809’, (i.e., presumably the Minister of Durness, 1764-1811), possibly Janet (1766-1785). However, the paper of the volume is dated 1813-1815, and this, together with the presence of a lament for Rob Donn in it, suggests that it is a later copy of...

His work will be more useful than Armstrong’s”. (Ingliston MS. A.i.5, number 25). Volumes 1-3...

Transcript, 1861, of the Book of the Dean of Lismore.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.72.3.6
Scope and Contents A not too accurate page-for-page copy of Aberdeen University (King’s College) Library (AUL) MS.449 (Mackechnie, page 356), which is itself largely a copy of Adv.MS.72.3.3. Made by a clerk (his initials, A C, are at pages 42, 75) for William Forbes Skene in 1861 when he and the Reverend Dr Thomas McLauchlan were preparing their edition of the Book of the Dean of Lismore, Adv.MS.72.3.3 being at this time still in possession of the Highland Society of Scotland and apparently therefore unknown...

Transcript made by Ewen MacLachlan of the Book of the Dean of Lismore.

 Item
Identifier: Adv.MS.72.3.3
Scope and Contents Manuscript in the hand of Ewen MacLachlan, Aberdeen, entitled ‘An t-Easpaig’ - presumably because it contains the work of the Dean of Lismore, whom MacLachlan calls (page 1) “Easpuig Leasmòr”. This is valuable, as being MacLachlan’s original Book of the Dean of Lismore transcript, subsequently (but not always accurately) copied by himself and others. (See Adv.MS.72.3.6). It does not strictly follow the order of the original, but the order in which MacLachlan found it easiest to read the...

The circumstances of the transcript are described by Donald Mackinnon in a letter to J T Clark, Keeper of the Advocates’ Library, 13 November 1895 (now pages ii-iii) and in a note at folio i verso. The Reverend Walter MacLeod was chosen to make the transcript due to his skill in...

Scope and Contents The transcripts were written by the Reverend Donald Mackintosh, who was ‘Keeper of the Records and Translator of the Gaelic Language’ to the Highland Society of Scotland from January 1801 until his death in 1808. These are transcripts from 2 of the 5 manuscripts which Mackintosh obtained on loan from Ewen MacLachlan of Kilbride in July 1801. He dates the completion of the last of the major items of his transcript 3rd August 1804 (page 201); on 25th May of that year he had in fact requested a...

Scope and Contents These thick manuscript volumes were written by three clerks (James Connell, Evander McLeod and another) under the supervision of the Reverend Dr John MacLeod of Dundonald. They were part of the final draft of the Highland Society of Scotland Dictionary, and were transcribed between June 1822 and June 1823 from materials prepared by MacLeod and Ewen MacLachlan (see below). Corrections appear in MacLeod’s hand; he complained that it took him two days to correct what his clerks wrote in four...
